Sports became very popular in the 1920’s in the United States. The most popular sports where baseball, Tennis, golf, swimming, football and boxing. Newspaper articles, the news and the radio would all talk about sports and make it a popular subject to talk about. Back then the sports where amateur compare to now. The National Football league (NFL) , Golf tours (PGA) and tennis circuits where all made during the 1920’s and they were the most popular too. The momentum of these sports built up in the 1920’s all the way up to present day. Some of the annual sports high lights are.

Babe Ruth was a HUGE sports hero during the 1920’s. He was a baseball player for the New York Yankees Babe Ruth was a very talented and skilled baseball player and one of the best during his time. Many people grew on the sport of baseball because they only wanted to see one guy play which was Babe Ruth. Ruth’s career with the yanks was 1920-1930 when his contract was bought out by the Boston Red Socks. Throughout the years Babe Ruth earned many different nicknames. There were two very popular ones such as such as the Great Bambino and Sultan Swat. These nick names stick with Babe throughout his career. In Babes first season with the Yankees he scored 54 home runs. Witch was huge during that time he hit twitch as many in a single season. He hit twitches as everyone else too. Babe Ruth won the home run crown almost every year and he went to seven World Series he end up winning four of them. Babe Ruth to this day is one of the best Baseball players to live on this plant. Another great sports hero during the 1920s was Jack Dempsey. He was an American pro boxer during the early 1920’s. Dempsey had a nick name that everyone knew him by which was Manassas Mauler. Dempsey was born in Manassas Colorado. Jack Dempsey won his first world heavy weight championship in 1919 he had won the title from Jess Willard who was also another great boxer. Dempsey fought against many great boxers across the world to defend his title. In the year of 1926 Jack Dempsey finally lost his title to another American boxer name Gene Tunney. After Dempsey defeat against Tunney he had retired from professional boxing. Jack Dempsey fought a total of 69 matches in his career as a professional boxer and 47 of those where won knock out fights that Dempsey won. Jack Dempsey is a great boxer and a lot of people enjoyed watching him box.
Last sports hero of the 1920’s was Caroline Gertrude Ederle. She was an American swimmer and she was the first female to swim across the English Channel. She was born in New York. Ederle started swimming as a very young child and she had stated competing as a young teen age girl. In the years of 1921 and 1925 she had broken many American swimming records. At Paris France 1924 Olympic Games she won gold for the 400m freestyle relay. Caroline wanted a new challenge so she swam the English Channel again and beat her original time by 2 hour. Her first time was 16 hours and 23 minutes her new time is 14 hours and 31 minutes. She beat the time for both male and female swimmers times. She made headlines on the newspapers and magazines she later became a swimming coach for young kids that wanted to learn how to swim just like her. In 1980 she became the Women Sports hall of fame. Ederle was great swimmer and the goals that she accomplishes are outstanding!
