Prohibition: The sale, Purchase, Trade and consumption of alcohol was outlawed on January 16, 1919. In December of 1917, prohibition was first being pushed into the United States. This was due to World War 1. During the war, President Wilson pushed a short term ban of alcohol because he wanted to focus on the production of war supplies. Congress soon ratified the Eighteenth Amendment, which banned the selling, manufacturing, and trade of any alcoholic beverage. While this new amendment did help many citizens in the Unites States, many had other ideas. Al Capone was a leader of a gang that specialized in organized crime and bootlegging. Not only was bootlegging becoming a major problem after the amendment was passed, but acts of murder and organized crime were on the rise. A well known crime was the St. Valentines Day Massacre. This crime involved Bugs Moran, one of Capone’s long term enemies, and some of Capone's men who were dressed in police uniforms. Capones men shot and killed 7 of Moran's men. Caprone was widely known for trying to “eliminate” his rivals when it came to Prohibition so that he could gain a larger income per year. This dispute is only one of many example on how prohibition was not perfect for the United States.
The Great Gatsby has a lot in common to the Prohibition era. The main character was a bootlegger, in the book Tom Buchanan finds out how Gatsby owns drug stores but secretly and illegally sells alcohol over the counter just like you would aspirin. Also he has encounters with corruption of the police when he has the police commissioner at one of the speakeasies. With Gatsby having connections to the police department he could further steal and distribute alcohol without having any trouble with the law. He was also given a note from the commissioner that saved him from getting pulled over by a police officer because he had done a favor for the commissioner. In The Great Gatsby prohibition was a major part because it was how Gatsby had earned his wealth over the course over only 3 years
